Heat Illness Prevention Tips

Good morning, D&D!

As you know with the fires all over California the air quality has been unhealthy for many of us. Along with the fires the Central Valley has been in a heat wave, please take precaution, stay cool, and hydrated when you can.

An email was sent out to clients in regarding Heat Illness Prevention for employees last week and here are some tips we wanted to share with you all:

  • Plan – Develop and implement an effective written heat illness prevention plan that includes emergency response procedures
  • Training – Train all employees and supervisors on heat illness prevention
  • Water – Provide drinking water that is fresh, pure, suitably cool and free of charge so that each worker can drink at least 1 quart per hour, and encourage workers to do so.
  • Shade – Provide shade when workers request it or when temperatures exceed 80 degrees. Encourage workers to take a cool-down rest in the shade for at least five minutes when they feel the need to do so. They should not wait until they feel sick to cool down.
  • When the temperature equals or exceeds 95 degrees, employers must provide one 10-minute “preventative cool-down rest period” every 2 hours. During the first 8 hours of a shift, the cool-down periods may be provided at the same time as the rest periods.
  • If employees work longer than 8 hours, the employer must provide an additional 10-minute cool-down rest period every 2 hours. For example, if the shift extends beyond 8 hours, an additional rest period is required at the end of the 8th hour of work. If the shift extends beyond 10 hours, another is required at the end of the 10th hour.
  • Employers must ensure that employees actually take the cool-down rest periods required under this section.
  • Employers are required to provide additional breaks as soon as the temperature equals or exceeds 95 degrees. For example, even if the temperature does not reach 95 degrees until the last half of an 8-hour shift, the employer must ensure that employees take cool-down rest periods starting at the end of the 8th hour of work.

Employee Benefits Department: UPDATE

Good afternoon,

Please read the attached announcement below from Matt DeFendis regarding changes to our Employee Benefits Department.

As you may or may not have heard, Debbie Pittman, our current manager in Employee Benefits, will be relocating to Phoenix at year end.  Fortunately, she will be staying with the company and work from Phoenix in a sales and service role.  Debbie has been a strong leader of our Benefits team and a strong voice on our Management team over the last six years.

As a result of Debbie’s move, we have asked Sandy Rogers to assume the day to day management of the department and she has accepted.  Sandy has been with D&D for 20 years and has been instrumental to the overall growth of the Benefits Department.  Sandy will be working closely with Debbie and Chris Peters during the transition.  As a result of this change, we anticipate reassigning some accounts within the department.  Sandy and Debbie will be reaching out to the producers to discuss changes within the department.

Chris Peters will remain as Sales Manager and we ask that all new business opportunities be discussed with Chris before being assigned within the department.  Your patience and understanding during this transition is greatly appreciated.

We wish to thank Debbie for the years of leadership she has provided to our Benefits Department and have complete confidence in Sandy’s experience and abilities to assume her new leadership position.

Modesto Office: Holiday Card

For those in the Modesto Office we’ll be shooting our holiday card this Thursday 11/21 and next Monday 11/25.

We’ll knock out the “glamour shots” in the morning of each day. Then we can get them to City Signs to create our card.

For those of you who are working remote, simply take a head shot with a blank background and send to Curt Zimmerman. Let us know if anyone wants to volunteer their photography skills with a camera, otherwise we’ll figure out our other options.

Having everyone’s participation will make this card fun and we can use to promote our business.

Thank you and please contact Curt for any other questions:

Happy Halloween!

Wishing you a safe and fun holiday from all of us at D&D! Our producers look forward to this day every year and always surprise us with their creativity. Can you guess one of the themes this year?

Pets Account for Nearly 400 Workers’ Comp Claims A Year in Oregon

“Slip and falls, flying tools, poor posture. The workplace can be dangerous, and now you can add pets to the risks that Oregon workers face.

Dogs and cats have accounted for more than 1,900 claims since 2014 received by SAIF, Oregon’s not-for-profit workers’ compensation insurance company. That averages out to nearly 400 pet-related worker’s comp claims each year.”
